Jewelry Insurance vs Your Homeowners Policy
Your homeowners policy technically covers jewelry. The catch is how much and for what — and the fine print surprises a lot of people after a loss.
The sub-limit trap
Standard homeowners policies cap jewelry coverage with a special sub-limit — often $1,500 to $2,500 for theft, regardless of what your jewelry is actually worth. Lose a $15,000 ring to theft and the policy may pay $1,500. Worse, coverage is usually limited to named perils and subject to your deductible.
How scheduling fixes it
Scheduling (a "valuable articles" or floater endorsement) insures specific items individually:
- Full agreed/appraised value — not a sub-limit.
- Broader "all-risk" coverage — including mysterious disappearance (you simply lost it), not just theft.
- Often no deductible.
- Worldwide coverage.
You provide an appraisal or receipt, and the item is covered for its real value.
What to do
- Inventory jewelry above the policy sub-limit.
- Get appraisals for significant pieces.
- Schedule them — individually or, for collections, sometimes blanket.
Frequently asked questions
Does homeowners insurance cover jewelry? Yes, but with a low special sub-limit for theft (often $1,500–$2,500) and named-peril coverage. Valuable pieces need to be scheduled.
What does scheduling jewelry do? It insures specific items for their full appraised value, with broader all-risk coverage (including accidental loss), usually no deductible, worldwide.
Do I need an appraisal to insure my ring? Typically yes for higher-value items — an appraisal or receipt establishes the value to schedule it.
